Nishiogi comichi terrace is a rental housing complex developed on the former site of the company’s dormitory in Nishi-Ogikubo, a property long owned by the Meitetsu Group.
Under Meitetsu City Design’s vision of ‘enhancing local appeal and opening up the community’s future’, the project aims to ‘create a landscape that remains in the hearts of its residents’.
With the hope of fostering a lifestyle where residents feel connected to each other and to the local community, NARUSE・INOKUMA ARCHITECTS Co., Ltd., who were responsible for the architectural design, created a plan featuring 23 terrace houses (in a row-house format) that harmonise with the calm residential surroundings, a series of narrow pathways (‘comichi’) linking them, and a semi-outdoor communal space at the center reminiscent of a traditional ‘well-side gathering’, where residents can meet and converse.

Green Wise planned the landscape design, incorporating herbs and fruit-bearing trees that residents can harvest, creating opportunities for people to connect through nature. Beyond simply planting greenery, Green Wise also plans to produce a plant guidebook and hold workshops to help residents enjoy and make use of the plants in their daily lives.
In addition to being edible, the planting design engages all five senses – flowers and fresh greenery delight the eyes, seasonal scents evoke the passage of time, and birdsong gently welcomes each morning.

During the design phase, 3D modeling and sunlight simulation were used to study the complex growing conditions across the site. Drawing on Green Wise’s long-standing expertise in IPM (Integrated Pest Management), the team conducted risk assessments for potential pest and disease outbreaks, ensuring that each plant species was selected and positioned appropriately. The aim is to ensure that the planting remains attractive over time while keeping future maintenance and renovation costs under control – ultimately contributing to the project’s long-term value and viability.

Enjoying edible plants as part of everyday life encourages awareness of the surrounding environment – the weather, the changing seasons, and the living creatures that share the space. Sharing harvests with neighbors naturally fosters ongoing communication among residents. We hope the life that begins here at Nishiogi Comichi Terrace will thrive with the greenery, enriching the neighbourhood’s character and helping open a new chapter for the community.
